Watch Bob Weir Make His Dave Matthews Band Debut At Berkeley Greek In 2016

56

Dave Matthews Band collaborated with a bevy of guest artists from all corners of the musical world, but it took 25 years into their career for the group to jam with a member of the Grateful Dead. On August 30, 2016 the DMB finally welcomed a member of the Dead, when Bob Weir sat-in with the group on a cover of Daniel Lanois’s “The Maker” at the Greek in Berkeley.

DMB’s stop at The Greek came just ahead of their annual Labor Day Weekend shows at The Gorge that in 2016 marked the start of a touring hiatus that lasted through February 2018. Though “The Maker” has been played by the Dave Matthews Band since the group’s early days, Weir had never performed the Lanois tune until his sit-in in Berkeley.

Dave Matthews Band’s version of “The Maker” at The Greek was their first cover of the tune in over a year. Weir added his signature rhythmic work to an expansive take on Lanois’s song that extended beyond the 12-minute mark.

Bob Weir has made guest appearances with other Dave Matthews projects over the years. On March 14, 1999 the Grateful Dead guitarist joined Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds for “All Along The Watchtower” at the pair’s Headwaters Benefit held at Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium in San Rafael, California. Next, Bob Weir sat-in with Dave & Friends on “Iko Iko” as part of the group’s Caribbean Cruise Getaway in 2006. More recently Matthews and Weir shared the stage at Brooklyn Bowl on January 28, 2023 during a private party for Zach Schreiber’s 50th birthday.

Dave Matthews returned the favor earlier this summer when he helped Dead & Company close a three-night stand at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado. The seeds for the guest spot on Dead & Company’s final tour were planted at the aforementioned private party in January as per Weir’s manager Matt Busch.
