Dead & Company Dusts Off ‘Liberty’ In Virginia

61

Dead & Company tour continued on Wednesday night at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia. The band featuring guitarists Bob Weir and John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann fit their first version of late-era Grateful Dead gem “Liberty” in over three years into last night’s first set.

Mayer led the group through “Cold Rain & Snow” to open the show before Weir fronted “Feel Like A Stranger.” John Mayer then channeled Ron “Pigpen” McKernan on “Mr. Charlie.” Next, both guitarists shared vocal duties for “Friend Of The Devil” with Bobby singing the “lost” final verse. “Dire Wolf” followed ahead of “Liberty.” Dead & Company initially played “Liberty” on June 10, 2016 and last night’s version was just the band’s sixth and first since July 13, 2018. The improvisational highlight of the frame was a well-jammed “Bird Song” that bled into a set-closing “Don’t Ease Me In.”

Dead & Company kicked off last night’s second set with a euphoric “Here Comes Sunshine” sung by John Mayer. “Cumberland Blues” then gave way to “He’s Gone.” Next, the six-piece offered the beloved “Scarlet Begonias”/”Fire On The Mountain” pairing. The latter was the first song this tour to feature lead vocals from Oteil Burbridge. Oteil went on to join Kreutzmann and Hart for a 10-minute “Drums” excursion, which ended with Mickey strumming the Beam. The instrumentalists returned for the exploratory “Space” jam.

“Space” bled into a Weir-led “Black Peter” that spanned over 17 minutes. Bobby was also in the spotlight for “Sugar Magnolia” to end the set. Dead & Company said farewell with a “Black Muddy River” encore sung by John Mayer. The band now heads to New York City’s Citi Field for a Friday night show.
