Delicate Steve Covers Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’

76

Guitarist Delicate Steve (Steve Marion) shared an instrumental version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” via ANTI-Records. Marion co-produced the cover with Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog who also plays drums on the track.

The beloved Cohen classic “Hallelujah” appears on the legendary singer-songwriter’s 1984 album Various Positions. Delicate Steve and McMicken’s version of the song grew out of phone conversations the musicians had as they spent time in Arizona during the pandemic and subsequently got together to record “Hallelujah.”

McMicken detailed the conversations and collaboration in a press release:

Steve had mentioned how crucial musical phrasing felt to his voice on the guitar and that really made me so excited. And as a fan of Steve’s I’ve always admired his way of making the guitar sing. That’s a rare gift. I told him about how when I heard his cover of “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen from a live tribute concert it actually brought me to tears. I was just blown away by hearing his guitar express that song so powerfully. Steve is a beautiful guy and I’m so glad we had that chance to explore together.
