Greensky Bluegrass Dusts Off Dire Straits Cover In North Carolina

63

Greensky Bluegrass performed a cover of the Dire Straits classic “Money For Nothing” for the first time in 55 shows during their Saturday night concert in Beech Mountain, North Carolina. The jamgrass act’s socially distanced gig was held at Beech Mountain Resort as part of the resort’s Summer Concert Series.

The quintet went with “Past My Prime” to open their first of two sets on Saturday. More originals followed in “Take Cover” and “Tuesday Letter” before Greensky Bluegrass played “Wheel Hoss” by Bill Monroe and “Money For Nothing.” GSBG last covered the song from Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms album back on January 18, 2020 in Philadelphia as per Phantasy Tour.

Saturday’s first set continued with mandolinist Paul Hoffman leading his mates through “What You Need” from the group’s most recent studio album, 2019’s All For Money and oldie “Reverend.” From there, Greensky covered John Bailes’ “Send Me Your Address From Heaven” and played the ballad “While Waiting.” The five-piece ended the frame with an extended version of live staple “Kerosene.”

Greensky Bluegrass got their second set at Beech Mountain Resort underway with guitarist Dave Bruzza‘s “A Letter To Seymour.” Fan-favorite “In Control” came next before the band returned to All For Money for the album’s title track. The band reached back to their early days for “Broken Highways” next and then covered The Dillards’ “Reuben’s Train.” Hoffman’s “Burn Them” followed along with “Merely Avoiding” off 2016’s Shouted, Written Down & Quoted.

Dobroist Anders Beck asked the crowd if it was having fun as part of the banter-filled “Fa Sho, Uh Huh.” Greensky then performed “Demons” and worked a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady” within “Leap Year” to close the set. For the encore, the band played the traditional bluegrass song “How Mountain Girls Can Love.”
