Hiatus Kaiyote Performs ‘Tiny Desk (Home) Concert’

Australia’s Hiatus Kaiyote decorated their The Villa recording studio in Melbourne with all sorts of props in time to film a new installment of NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series. The quartet was joined by backing vocalists for performances of five songs from their latest album, Mood Valiant.

“I’m a treasure hunter at heart,” frontwoman Nai Palm told NPR Music, “and the beautiful thing about dressing a set with sentimental artifacts from my house is that I feel super comfy to perform.” Palm, bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin, drummer/percussionist/vibraphonist Perrin Moss and vocalists Alejandro ‘Silentjay’ Abapo, Laura Christoforidis and Jace Excell were clearly feeling it as they kicked off the set with the jazzy “Sip Into Something Soft” and ethereal “Rose Water.”

Hiatus Kaiyote then picked up the energy with the hard-hitting “Rose Water.” Palm displayed her impressive pipes throughout the set but especially on the “Get Sun” that follows. The band and their friends closed out the session the same way Mood Valiant ends, with the avant-garde “Blood & Marrow.”
