Joe Russo’s Almost Dead set up camp at the LOCKN’ Farm in Arrington, VA for the band’s curated music festival over the weekend. Along with headlining performances by the Grateful Dead-inspired group, August 13th–15th saw sets from The Slip, The Barr Brothers, and more. In addition to Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s traditional performances, the band staged two “Other Shit” sets that focused on music outside the Deadsphere.
For the first “Other Shit” set of the weekend on Saturday, JRAD turned its lovelight on the music of Pink Floyd. The 50-minute, four-song set began with the monumental composition, “Echoes”. The band glided through the Meddle odyssey into “Time” which linked up with another Floyd epic, “Pigs (Three Different Ones)”. JRAD executed the meticulously composed music with studio-like precision as the band closed out the first “Other Shit” set with the “Breathe (Reprise)” coda that follows “Time” on The Dark Side of the Moon.

On Sunday, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead enlisted the aid of drummer Andrew Barr (The Barr Brothers, The Slip) to fill out the rhythm section for an “Other Shit” set devoted to The Allman Brothers Band. The extended ensemble opened up with the quintessential ABB improvisational piece “Whipping Post”. JRAD rolled into some high-intensity blues with “One Way Out” before laying off the throttle on an otherworldly “Dreams”. The second and final “Other Shit” set was bookended by yet another all-time ABB jam vehicle, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”.
