Phish concluded a three-show run at Atlantic City Beach on Sunday night. The band’s last show ahead of a two-week break got off to an excellent start with an exceptional early-first set “The Moma Dance” and finished strong with a second set that showcased more improvised highlights.

Phish Tour 2021 – Setlist, Recap & The Skinny: Atlantic City
“The Landlady” opened the concert Sunday evening, recalling the similar show-starting slot it held on night three of their run at Alpine Valley in 2019. The tempered, Latin-infused rhythms eased the band into the start of the set. Guitarist Trey Anastasio could be heard telling his bandmates his plan to play the intro to “Scents And Subtle Sounds” (that was not performed when they started the song the night before) followed by “The Moma Dance.” The band then played the “Scents” intro, in a similar fashion to the opening track on their 2004 studio album Undermind, and then dropped into “The Moma Dance.”
A typical early-first set placement of “The Moma Dance,” led to an atypical opening up of several minutes of improvisation, developing into a full-on Type II excursion. Trey employed the synthy effect he’s been fond of this tour, steering a linear, patiently constructed jam that segued into “The Final Hurrah.” The Kasvot Växt song had keyboardist Page McConnell firing “faceplant into rock” samples while propelling the psychedelic rocker forward.
Bassist Mike Gordon was put into the lead role for his old-school favorite “Mike’s Song.” The ensuing jam found Trey locking into a run that hit on “Strawberry Letter 23” en route to a satisfying apex. The opening notes of the instrumental “I Am Hydrogen” signaled the start of the “Mike’s Song” > “I Am Hydrogen” > “Weekapaug Groove” trifecta. The classic trio was fulfilled when Gordon jump-started “Weekapaug” with a funky initiating solo that set the tone for the rest of the bubbly tune.
Staying with the classics, the foursome dug into “The Sloth,” and after playing the Gamehendge song Trey told the crowd assembled on the sand, “thank you, going way back, going way back.” Next came “Roggae,” which was capped by Trey holding a long piercing note, punctuating the slow burner. “Back On The Train” kept the set chugging along. The band pulled from their early days once more with a set-closing offering of “You Enjoy Myself.” Trey put down his guitar and danced along to Mike and drummer Jon Fishman’s breakdown that led into the song’s ending vocal jam.

Crashing like a wave on the shore, “Carini” ignited the final set of the weekend in Atlantic City. The fierce heaviness of the song soon gave way to an expansive sequence of jamming, shifting keys and edging ahead through several blissful passages. Page established the jam’s texture by incorporating his array of synthesized sonics that was supported and echoed by Trey and Mike. “Set Your Soul Free” emerged from the jam and then led right back into another batch of improvisation that contained elements of “Carini” and a few other teases. Page continued to cycle through his cache of sounds as he again guided the feel of the jam.
Phish’s sixth performance of the Ghosts Of The Forest song “Beneath a Sea of Stars Part 1” quickly drew cheers as Trey sang about the weather being fine and crashing waves. The dramatic piece dissipated into “Piper.” Picking up the tempo, “Piper” propelled with intensity, Trey again utilizing his low-end synth effect over Fish and Mike’s supportive pocket and well within Page’s realm. At the end of the jam, Trey started playing the main “Carini” riff and the others joined the short reprise that led into the site-appropriate “Waves.” Like “Waves,” the subsequent “Simple” kept the set sailing on but did not go much beyond the song’s structure.
Another Ghosts Of The Forest selection, “About To Run” was an invitation for Trey to pummel the beach with a ferocious onslaught of shredding. The set barreled to a blistering conclusion on the burst of energetic output coming in the form of the instrumental “First Tube.”
“Thank you, everyone, this was just magical,” Trey said as the band came back to the stage for the encore. “I just can’t thank you enough. Thank you for being here with us.”
Drawing once more on their early-career material, the multifaceted “Fluffhead” was warmly received and well-executed. Not yet done, a jaunt through “Backwards Down The Number Line” sealed this leg of the band’s tour. Trey once again thanked the audience and encouraged safe travels.
Phish tour resumes on Friday, August 27 with the first of three shows at The Gorge. Livestreams are available via LivePhish.com.
