The Avett Brothers Honor Tom T. Hall In North Carolina

The Avett Brothers paid tribute to Tom T. Hall on Saturday night in Wilmington, North Carolina one day after the acclaimed country music singer-songwriter died. Saturday’s Avett Brothers’ concert at Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park as part of the Azalea Festival featured a pair of Tom T. Hall covers.

Hall passed away on Friday at the age of 85 at his home in Franklin, Tennessee after a career in which “The Storyteller” penned dozens of hits including “Harper Valley PTA,” “Hello Vietnam,” “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died” and “A Week in a Country Jail.” Another beloved song written by Tom T. Hall was “I Love,” which The Avetts opened with on Saturday night.

Tom T. Hall originally released “I Love” on his 1973 studio album, For The People In The Last Hard Town. Seth Avett and Scott Avett gathered around a single mic to perform the song in Wilmington on Saturday. The cover was a debut for The Avett Brothers.

The Avett Brothers also dusted off their cover of Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got To Memphis” in North Carolina. Saturday’s version was the band’s first since September 22, 2017 as per Setlist.FM. Hall initially issued the song on 1969’s Ballad Of Forty Dollars & His Great Other Songs.

“Rest In Peace Tom T. Hall. I am your student forever,” wrote Seth Avett in a note posted on his Instagram page. Seth also shared a solo acoustic cover of Hall’s “Pamela Brown.”
