The Infamous Stringdusters’ Andy Falco & Travis Book Present Jerry Garcia Tribute In Georgia

58

The Infamous Stringdusters guitarist Andy Falco and bassist Travis Book delivered a Jerry Garcia tribute concert at The Hunt House Pavilion in Marietta, Georgia on Friday. The duo dipped into songs from both the Jerry Garcia solo repertoire, the Grateful Dead catalog and more.

The Infamous Stringdusters members are no strangers to the work of Jerry Garcia and the Dead with The Dusters and its members having performed similar tributes in the past. After a greeting from Book, the duo got things underway with the traditional “Shady Grove,” a song recorded by Jerry Garcia and mandolinist David Grisman. Book would add some bowed bass before Falco kicked off the tune with the familiar riff. The first set also contained GD classics like “Dire Wolf,” “Brown-Eyed Women, “Ramble On Rose” and “He’s Gone” along with the Dead-related bluegrass standard “Rosa Lee McFall” and more. The first set came to a close with “Jack Straw.”

The second frame got underway with the Dead arrangement of the traditional “Jack-A-Roe” followed by the Garcia/Hunter composition “Bird Song,” which originally appeared on Jerry’s 1972 debut solo LP Garcia. The second set also saw Book and Falco leaning heavily on GD tunes including “New Speedway Boogie,” “Shakedown Street,” “Stella Blue,” “Touch Of Grey,” “Friend Of The Devil” and “Terrapin Station.” Book would once again utilize the bow on the latter before Falco led the way through the Dead epic, which stretched to over 13-minutes.

The duo also offered up the Peter Rowan-penned “Midnight Moonlight” — which Jerry performed with Rowan in Old & In The Way as well as in his solo repertoire — along with the Garcia/Grisman recorded blues standard “The Thrill Is Gone.” Book and Falco closed out the second set with the beloved Grateful Dead tune, “Ripple.” The longtime collaborators harmonized together well on the acoustic Dead classic ahead of an encore featuring the traditional “I Know You Rider.”
