Billy Joel Dusts Off Rolling Stones Covers In Cincinnati

78

Billy Joel paid tribute to Charlie Watts on Friday in Cincinnati during his first show since The Rolling Stones drummer died. Joel and his band busted out a partial cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar” towards the end of their concert at Great American Ball Park after performing a bit of “Honky Tonk Women” during their main set.

Saxophonist Mark Rivera led the ensemble on what was their first “Brown Sugar” since February 10, 2017 as per Setlist.FM. “That’s for Charlie,” Billy Joel exclaimed at the end of the song. The Rolling Stones originally released “Brown Sugar” as the lead single of their 1971 album Sticky Fingers.

“Brown Sugar” came after Billy Joel began his encore with beloved hits “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” “Uptown Girl” and “It’s Still Rock And Roll To Me.” Joel went on to end the night with “Big Shot” and “You May Be Right.” A poignant moment took place during the main set, when the Piano Man dedicated “New York State Of Mind” to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack one night before the 20th anniversary. Billy also worked a “Honky Tonk Women” interlude into “The River Of Dreams” in the main set.
