Fugees Reunite At New York City Concert

101

Fugees reunited last night at a concert in New York City. The show at Pier 17, a Global Citizen event, was the first time the influential hip-hop group performed together in 15 years.

Fugees announced the concert in NYC earlier this week as part of an upcoming tour in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their 1996 album The Score, disclosing the venue the day of the show. Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel were accmompanied by a full band, a horn section and backing vocalists.

The set began with The Score title track, followed by fellow album tracks “How Many Mics,” “Zealots” and “Fu-Gee-La.” Fugees also offered Hill’s now-classic interpretation of “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” which was followed by another The Score hit single, “Ready or Not.”

The reunion performance also saw Jean deliver a freestyle during which the Haitian rapper touched on the United States’ recent treatment of migrants arriving from his native country.

“Respect the miracle of this union,” Hill reportedly told the crowd of 3,000. “Respect that we can get on this stage and still do this.”

Fugees ended their reunion show by covering Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry.” The performance will be part of the Global Citizen Live livestream event on Saturday, September 25. Fugees’ Diaspora Calling Tour formally begins in Chicago on November 2.
