Hear The Grateful Dead Perform ‘Playing In The Band’ In 1971 At St. Louis’ Fox Theatre

The Grateful Dead‘s live “Playing In The Band” performance from December 10, 1971 at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis is the latest audio released from the band’s forthcoming Listen To The River: St. Louis ‘71 ‘72 ‘73 box set. Both the massive box set featuring seven previously unreleased concerts that were held in St. Louis between 1971 – 1973 and audio from December 10, 1971 (digital, CD, vinyl) arrive through Rhino on October 1.

Box sets are individually numbered and limited to 13,000 copies. The 20-CD collection and digital release feature the Grateful Dead’s December 9 – 10, 1971 and October 17 – 19, 1972 concerts at the Fox as well as shows played at Kiel Auditorium October 29 – 30, 1973.

“Playing In The Band” was written by guitarist Bob Weir and lyricist Robert Hunter. “Debuting earlier in 1971, ‘Playing In The Band’ began its life with no jam, but by the end of 1971, the initial improvisation explorations that would define the song later in 1972 onward could start to be seen, including this rendition,” GD archivist and the set’s producer David Lemieux wrote in a note accompanying the audio on YouTube. “The version that appeared on Bob’s solo Ace album in 1972 is similar to these late-1971 performances, where the Dead began stepping outside of the song’s structure to take it outside.”
