Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Covers Waylon Jennings In Asheville

140

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead opened their show Saturday in Asheville, North Carolina by covering Waylon Jennings’ “Only Daddy That’ll Walk The Line.” The performance marked the third time the band had covered the song, having last performed it in March 2018.

Guitarist Scott Metzger sang lead on the Jennings cover, which JRAD first played back in January 2015. The rarity opened the first set and was followed by Grateful Dead staples “Cassidy,” a 20-minute “Eyes Of The World” and “Loose Lucy.” The opening half came to a close with a well-jammed “Dancing In The Street.”

JRAD opened the second set with “The Other One” that stretched into an expansive improvisation that landed on “Reuben & Cerise.” The uninterrupted sequence continued weaving improvised segments through “Big Railroad Blues,” “Throwing Stones” and “Bird Song,” before making a brief return to “The Other One.” Guitarist Tom Hamilton then led the group through “Here Comes Sunshine” that incorporated elements of “Unbroken Chain” before “Turn On Your Lovelight,” a JRAD rarity making just its seventh setlist, brought an end to the second set.

Making just its eighth JRAD setlist, Bob Dylan’s “Mighty Quinn” served as the evening’s encore. Stream Saturday’s concert at the Salvage Station via taper Z-Man and watch video footage captured by Steven Ziegler below:
