Grateful Dead’s final performance of keyboardist Brent Mydland’s “We Can Run” was shared as the latest installment in the All The Years Live video series. The archival footage comes from the band’s concert on July 10, 1990 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Mydland wrote the environmentally-conscious “We Can Run” with John Perry Barlow. The song made its live debut on February 5, 1989 and was recorded for the Dead’s 1989 album, Built To Last. Performed a total of 22 times, its last appearance occurred shortly before Mydland’s untimely death on July 26, 1990, at age 37.
Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux shared his notes on the final “We Can Run,” writing:
Brent’s environmental anthem was a big part of the Grateful Dead’s setlists for a year and half, and was one of Brent’s four contributions to the Dead’s final studio album, Built To Last, released on Halloween 1989. More than 30 years later, “We Can Run” still resonates and reflects the climate change that planet Earth is experiencing now. This version was recorded live just two weeks before Brent’s passing.
