Daptone Records released video of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings performing James Brown’s “There Was A Time” from New York City’s legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. The performance is set to appear on Daptone’s The Daptone Super Soul Revue Live At The Apollo triple LP due out on October 1.
The famed funk, soul and gospel label previewed The Daptone Super Soul Revue Live At The Apollo with performances from two of Daptone’s towering figures, the late musicians Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley. Daptone shared Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires’ “Let Love Stand A Chance” and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ “Get Up And Get Out.” The compilation also features performances by Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, Antibalas, The Budos Band, Menahan Street Band and more.
James Browns’s “There Was A Time” appears on the Godfather Of Soul’s 1968 album I Can’t Stand Myself When You Touch Me. Jones pays tribute to Brown — who holds the record for Apollo performances at over 200 — by delivering a rousing rendition of the JB number.
