Band of Horses will release a new studio album entitled Things Are Great via BMG on January 21, 2022. Today, the band unveiled “Crutch,” the lead single from their sixth studio album and first since 2016’s Why Are You OK.
The current Band Of Horses lineup consists of band founder/frontman Ben Bridwell along with bassist Matt Gentling, multi-instrumentalist Ryan Monroe, guitarist Ian MacDougall and drummer Creighton Barrett. Things Are Great is the group’s first LP to feature Gentling and MacDougall.
Bridwell produced or co-produced all 10 tracks with collaborators include Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips) and Dave Sardy. “Sonically the album is a return to their earlier work and the kind of raw ethos that lies at the heart of Band of Horses,” noted press materials announcing Things Are Great.
“I think like a lot of my songs, ‘Crutch’ starts with something from my real life. Obviously ‘Crutch’ means some of the things that I was dependent on. My relationship for one,” Bridwell said in regards to the lead single from Things Are Great. “I think I wanted to say, ‘I’ve got a crush on you,’ and I thought it was funny how relationships also feel like crutches. I feel like everybody has had a time when nothing goes right and you still have to carry on. I think that feeling hits you in this song even if you don’t know what the specifics are.”
