Bruce Springsteen Appears On ‘Colbert’

Bruce Springsteen was Stephen Colbert’s guest on a special The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday. The Boss not only performed “The River,” but he sat for a lengthy interview in which he discussed new projects and more.

Today marked the release of Springsteen’s book with President Barack Obama, Renegades: Born In The USA, a companion to the pair’s podcast of the same name. The 72-year-old musician started the interview by discussing the book and podcast. Bruce revealed he asked the former president how it wanted to be refered to and the answer was, “call me Barack.” Obama threw the query back at Springsteen who told Colbert he humorously responded, “Mr. Boss, please.” The Boss pulled no punches as he then took aim at Republican leaders.

Last night’s second segment began with Colbert asking Springsteen about how he keeps a balance between life and art. “Love my job, great way to make a living, no way to live,” Bruce said. “If you fully subsume yourself in it, it’s no way to live. There have been many many artists previous to me and my peers that didn’t figure that out and it could be very very very dangerous to you mentally, physically … not cleaving between your work life and your family life and your home life,” Springsteen added.

A bit of show and tell followed as the legendary musician brought out his one-of-a-kind Fender guitar. “This guitar has been in every club, theater, arena and stadium across America and most of the world,” The Boss proclaimed.

Next, Bruce talked up the forthcoming The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts live album and concert film. Springsteen mentioned the cover art leaves out E Street Band pianist Roy Bittan. “I’m in very deep shit about it, which is why I bring it up this evening,” The Boss exclaimed. He then spoke about the benefit shows featured in the set before a clip from the film was aired.

Springsteen wrote “The River” shortly before the performances at New York City’s Madison Square Garden featured on The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts. He spoke about how the song marked a big change in his music and went on to deliver a stunning solo performance of “The River.”
