Chris Robinson & Nels Cline Join Tedeschi Trucks Band At Beacon Theatre

Tedeschi Trucks Band resumed a tradition on Thursday when they kicked off a seven-show residency at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline were the 12-piece ensemble’s special guest last night as the TTB celebrates 10 years of performing at the venue on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Guitarists Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks first brought their group to The Beacon Theatre on September 10, 2011 and returned around the same time each year with the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic. Trucks was a longtime member of The Allman Brothers Band, a group that performed nearly 250 concerts at The Beacon between 1989 and 2014. So, it was only fitting this year’s TTB run began with the ABB live staple pairing of “Don’t Want You No More” and “It’s Not My Cross To Bear.” Cline was on hand for both while Tedeschi emerged in time to belt out the latter.

Last night’s Tedeschi Trucks Band concert consisted of one lengthy frame and a lone encore following an opening set from Cline and his Consentrik Quartet. TTB went without Cline to follow “Don’t Want You No More”/”It’s Not My Cross To Bear” by romping through “Signs” and performing the pretty “Don’t Drift Away.” Vocalist Mike Mattison then fronted the group on a recently debuted cover of Bessie Smith’s “Gin House Blues.” Next up was a concise “Do I Look Worried,” soul-laden “Part Of Me” and take on Susan’s solo classic “Just Won’t Burn.” From there, TTB ripped through “Let Me Get By” and covered Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters.”

Cline came back out for an adventurous “Shame” that spanned over 17 glorious minutes. Both Nels and Derek showed off their impressive skill sets individually and together throughout the instant classic version of the Signs single. Each guitarist had multiple opportunities to build the music to huge crescendos. TTB continued sans Nels for the beloved “Made Up Mind” and Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”

Thursday’s main TTB set closer saw Chris Robinson lead the band through the Joe Cocker popularized “Space Captain” in a reprise of one of The Black Crowes frontman’s contributions to the incredible Mad Dogs & Englishmen tribute hosted by TTB at LOCKN’ in 2015. A documentary chronicling the all-star 2015 performance, Learning To Live Together: The Return Of Mad Dogs & Englishmen, premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival last night. Robinson was also on-hand for Thursday’s encore featuring the Joe Tex cover “Show Me.” Tedeschi Trucks Band continues the residency tonight.
