Goose Debuts Vampire Weekend Cover & New Original At Terminal 5

Goose kicked off their 2021 Fall Tour on Friday at Terminal 5 in New York City. The Connecticut-based quintet debuted a new original along with a Vampire Weekend cover for the first of two nights in New York.

Goose got the first set underway with “So Ready,” the opener on their 2021 album Shenanigans Nite Club. Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda led the way through the tune before keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach got the crowd involved with some handclaps as the band launched into a revved-up funk jam which saw Anspach rocking the clav well. Peter slung his guitar around for the vibey middle section which escalated quickly as Anspach handled lead guitar. Drummer Ben Atkind then dropped the group into a four on the floor beat over which Rick tore things up ahead of “So Ready’s” conclusion.

The quintet then got into The Band’s “Look Out Cleveland’ which featured more clav-laced funk on the jam that went a little weird ahead of another blast off from Mitarotonda. “Honeybee” fell in the third song slot before Goose unveiled a new feel on “Indian River,” from their 2016 debut LP, Moon Cabin. “The Whales” would count as the penultimate song of the set ahead of “All I Need” to close out the first frame.

Goose launched the second set with Vampire Weekend’s “2021.” The song originally appears on VW’s 2019 album Father of The Bride. Earlier this year, Ezra Koenig and company tapped Goose to record a version of the song for VW’s 40:42 EP, which, along with Goose’s entry, dubbed “2021 (January 5, to be exact),” also featured an interpretation by saxophonist Sam Gendel. Each version had to stretch to 20:21.

From “2021,” Goose would head into a new original debut, “The Old Man’s Boat.” The quintet kept segueing through “Rosewood Heart,” “Into The Myst” and “Echo Of A Rose” before bookending the seamless set with “2021.” Goose delivered an encore of Shenanigans cut, “Flodown.”
