PREMIERE: Dopapod Issues First New Music In Two Years, “Think” [Watch/Listen]

86

Dopapod returns today with the band’s first new music in two years, “Think”. Premiering exclusively via Live For Live Music, the song arrives along with an accompanying music video just as the band begins a fall tour tonight, October 20th, in Saratoga Springs, NY.

The Berklee College of Music-bred quartet’s first new output since 2019’s Emit Time arrives like a freight train courtesy of Rob Compa‘s driving guitar riff. The structure soon takes place as a densely orchestrated composition, leaning hard on the group’s prog influences.

“Think” is an intricate balancing act, as Eli WindermanChuck Jones, and Neal “Fro” Evans each navigate different tones, time signatures, and other musical minutiae to create a song as complex as it is catchy.

Beyond the instrumentation, “Think” is unapologetically Dopapod. Imbued with the palindrome-fixated band’s trademark, tongue-in-cheek wit, the song encourages listeners to think for themselves—though doing so would mean they’re taking orders from a rock band. Of the song’s message, Winderman told Live For Live Music,

The overall message we were trying to convey with “Think” is to think for yourself. “While being the person that is you, you should think for you.” Sonically we aimed to create something completely unique to us as a band while paying homage to the bands that inspired us like Pink Floyd, Yes, Cornelius, King Crimson, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Phish.

Being that our band name is a palindrome, we like to play with themes of symmetry and balance.  The beginning of the song starts with opposites ‘right and left’ overlapping with ‘right and wrong.’ I think the impetus of this lyrical content stems from being knee deep in Trumpism while writing this song. I think we felt a responsibility to convey our feelings about this. “You can do no wrong, as long as you do everything right all of the time” would potentially be something a far right radio person would say or imply, and on the other side of the spectrum if people don’t think for themselves we end up with two extremely polarized groups. This is obviously not healthy for our world.
