Primus took the crowd at the Mission Ballroom for a whacky and wild ride as the band’s A Tribute To Kings Rush tribute tour rolled through Denver, CO on Thursday night. Announced back in 2020 and delayed due to Covid, A Tribute To Kings sees the band performing a full Rush cover set each night, in addition to a set of original material.
Following an opening set from Black Moutain, Les Claypool, Larry LaLonde, and Tim Alexander took the Mission Ballroom stage and started with an all-original set. The band kicked things off with a dark and twisted “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers”, from 1991’s Sailing The Seas Of Cheese. “Lacquer Head” came next, which contained a partial “Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers” reprise, before sliding into “Antipop”, from the 1999 album of the same name.

From here, Primus got a bit funkier with “Duchess and the Proverbial Mind Spread”, off the Brown Album, before throwing it back to Antipop‘s “Eclectic Electric”. The ever-popular “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” followed, complete with Claypool’s laugh-inducing lyrics and sprawling lead licks from LaLonde’s guitar.
Back to the Brown Album Primus went with “Over the Falls”, before blasting forward to 2011 with Green Naugahyde‘s “Lee Van Cleef”. After a romp through “Professor Nutbutter’s House of Treats”, Claypool, LaLonde, and Alexander finished the first frame with yet another Brown Album track, “Shake Hands With Beef”.
A six-song Rush tribute set commenced with the fitting “A Farewell to Kings”, from the 1977 album of the same name, before an expansive flight through “Xanadu”. Here, Primus really took the time to explore the lengthy 11-minute track and guide the Mission Ballroom crowd through to “Closer to the Heart”. After three more Rush tracks, “Cinderella Man”, “Madrigal” and “Cygnus X-1”, Primus came back for a four-song encore of “The Heckler”, “Is It Luck?”, “Frizzle Fry”, and “Southbound Pachyderm”.
