Remembering Tom Petty: Watch LOCKN 2014 Headlining Set With The Heartbreakers

76

It’s been four years since Tom Petty’s sudden and tragic death from an accidental drug overdose on October 2, 2017. Tom was one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time and fronted one of the greatest rock bands of all time, The Heartbreakers, since 1976.

Nearly 30 years, a slew of hits and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction later, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers headlined the 2014 LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia. The 12-string electric guitar has always been a cornerstone of The Heartbreakers sound — whether played by Tom or Mike Campbell — thanks to influences like The Beatles and The Byrds. Petty and company — Tom, Mike, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair and drummer Steve Ferrone — kicked off their LOCKN’ set with a Byrds tune, “So You Want To Be A Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” ahead of the sing-along favorite, “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” The group then got into material from their final studio album, 2014’s Hypnotic Eye, with “American Dream Plan B.”

While The Heartbreakers would also deliver Hypnotic Eye tunes “Forgotten Man,” “Shadow People” and “U Get Me High,” as with most Petty shows the set saw no shortage of classics including “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin,” “Refugee” and set-closer “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” The set also included stripped-down renditions of “Yer So Band” and “Learning To Fly.” Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers returned to deliver a rocking encore of “You Wreck Me” and “American Girl.”
