St. Paul & The Broken Bones Return To ‘The Alien Coast’ On New Album [Video/Audio]

St. Paul & The Broken Bones have announced details for the band’s fourth studio LP, The Alien Coast. Set to arrive on January 28th, 2022 via ATO Records, the new album marks a homecoming for the band as it returned to its native Birmingham, AL.

Armed with unlimited studio time in their home base, St. Paul & The Broken Bones dig deep on the new album as they explore both new songwriting techniques as well as new musical technology with an increased interest in synths and samples. Additionally, the history of Birmingham forms a pivotal backbone for the album according to frontman Paul Janeway.

“The title actually came from reading about the history of the Gulf of Mexico, which is home for us,” Janeway said in a statement. “When the settlers—or invaders, really—first came to the Gulf Coast they couldn’t figure out what it was, and started referring to it as the Alien Coast. That term really stuck with me, partly because it feels almost apocalyptic.”

The band’s fresh approach is immediately apparent on the lead single, “The Last Dance”. From the pulsating rhythm to centralized synths, St. Paul & The Broken Bones forgo their trademark vintage soul sound for a slightly-updated retro dance-pop experiment. The product is held together by a Footloose-esque music video featuring renowned dancer Liv Mai (EuphoriaTransparent) directed by Machete Bang Bang (Coldplay, Jeff Goldblum, Evan Rachel Wood).

“The juxtaposition of dancing while facing certain doom is what ‘Last Dance’ is all about,” Janeway said of the video. “Like dancing through a Mad Max scene. So naturally the video had to be a dance video. It was a pleasure to work with Machete Bang Bang and all the folks involved on this. I hope y’all enjoy.”

Along with “The Last Dance”, SPATBB shared the brief gospel-noir number “3000 AD Mass”. The song combines both the apocalyptic aura that permeates The Alien Coast with Janeway’s personal history as a preacher-in-training who learned to sing through the gospel choir.
