TAUK has shared s live pro-shot video of its cover of Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, filmed during the band’s recent stop at The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC on October 9th. The performance came as part of TAUK’s Chaos Companion Tour in support of the band’s September 2021 album, Chaos Companion.
The two-set, headlining show saw TAUK weave together several Chaos Companion tracks with covers throughout the night, including Björk‘s “Army Of Me” and Cream‘s “White Room”. This rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” came towards the end of set one, following a spirited take on Chaos Companion‘s “The Let Out”, a pro-shot video of which TAUK shared earlier this week.
The slowly building grunge classic begins with some soft picking from Matt Jalbert‘s guitar that loosely resembles the song’s iconic riff. As members Alric “A.C.” Carter (keys), Isaac Teel (drums), and Charlie Dolan (bass) joined in, the song took shape along with a noticeable buzz from the crowd. Jalbert brought the song to its heavier “chorus” section—though TAUK’s version contains no vocals—before the band descended into a jammier space and A.C.’s synthesizer took hold of the room. He and Jalbert traded lines of improv while Teel and Dolan controlled the tempo and pushed the band through a short but explorative jam section and back to the familiarity of the song’s ending.
