Phish shared pro-shot video of the jammed-out “Axilla (Part II)” from Friday night in Las Vegas. The +21-minute version came early in the first set during the band’s second of four Halloween weekend concerts at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
“Axilla (Part II)” was included on the band’s 1994 studio album, Hoist. Phish debuted the song live on April 16, 1994; just weeks after the release of the LP. “Axilla (Part II)” features different lyrics than the original “Axilla,” which first saw action on November 19, 1992.
While “Axilla (Part II)” was played regularly in 1994, the band shelved the tune after four performances the following year. The original “Axilla” returned on November 8, 1996 and was a live staple through August 10, 2021. Phish brought back “Axilla (Part II)” at Shoreline Amphitheatre on August 31, 2021. The version played after the “Oliva’s Pool” opener on Friday was the first of either “Axilla” to go deep outside of an “Axilla” on December 28, 1997 that spanned nearly 10 minutes.
“Clocking in at 21:23, this unexpected jam vehicle would take many turns throughout the course of its time here, starting first in dark, dirty waters then quickly transitioning to a lighter, more blissful space,” JamBase contributor Dianna Hank wrote in a recap of Friday’s concert. “The first Type II jam of the evening became totally unrecognizable from the original song structure, first lifting off into the clouds before nose-diving back to earth with a fervor being driven by the drums of the one and only Jon Fishman himself.”
The expansive “Axilla (Part II)” ended with banter from guitarist Trey Anastasio and bassist Mike Gordon originally featured in “Little Squirrel,” a song recorded in 1983 for the pre-Phish project Bivouac Jaun. The “Little Squirrel” banter has appeared numerous times since initially spoken during the “Makisupa Policeman” in Santa Barbara this past Tuesday night.
