Zero Announces New Live Album, ‘Chance In A Million’, Plans Release Show At The Fillmore [Audio]

Monolithic jazz/jam outfit Zero will celebrate the release of a new live album, Chance In A Million, with a show at The Fillmore in San Francisco on February 3rd, 2022.

Even for a band as mythical as Zero, the recordings on Chance In A Million showcase a momentous time in the band’s history. Comprised of core members Steve Kimock (guitar) and Greg Anton (drums), the band has featured stars of the Bay Area including Merl SaundersVince WelnickJohn CipollinaBanana, and countless others. The group was formed out of the tragedy that was the death of Keith Godchaux on July 23rd, 1980. Shortly after he and his wife Donna Jean Godchaux left the Grateful Dead in 1979, they started their own Heart of Gold Band, recruiting Kimock and Anton. Keith died in a car accident just days after the band’s first show, but the spirit of the group lived on as Kimock and Anton embarked on a new collaboration that would become Zero.

For nearly 12 years, Zero existed as an instrumental ensemble, issuing three albums of wordless odysseys. Armed with words from Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, the band took the stage at the Great American Music Hall to debut them live with vocalist Judge Murphy over the course of a three-night run October 14th–16th, 1992. Selections from that flashpoint in Zero’s history make up Chance In A Million, recorded live by Grateful Dead sound director Dan Healy. The band’s lineup rotated for these shows but included the core of Kimock and Anton joined by Vince Welnick, Judge Murphy, Pete SearsMartin Fiero, Liam HanrahanNicky HopkinsJohn Kahn, and Bobby Vega. This marks the band’s first official output since the 2011 studio album Absolute Zero.

Zero will celebrate the release of the album back in San Francisco, this time at The Fillmore. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday at 7 a.m. PT.
