On Friday, November 12th, Amanda Shires will deliver her much-anticipated new album, For Christmas. The singer, songwriter, and 400 Unit fiddle player previewed the forthcoming release on Friday with a second single, “Home to Me”.
“Home to Me” joins “Gone For Christmas” as one of the nine original For Christmas tracks, out via Silver Knife/Thirty Tigers. Two covers also made the cut for this studio output, a take on Frank Loesser‘s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” and “Silent Night”.
“Gone For Christmas” proved that this new record will be anything but a generic Christmas album, and “Home to Me” only reinforces that notion. It includes contributions from guitarist Pat Buchanan, her 400 Unit bandmate Jimbo Hart (bass), Isbell/Shires’ Nashville neighbor and live collaborator Peter Levin (piano), and drummer Fred Eltringham, in addition to fiddle, violin, and vocals from Shires.
Arriving as a gentle and soft sung ballad, “Home to Me” hears Shires sings of lost love. Throughout the song’s 3:50 runtime she croons beautifully about “ice on the runway/ice on the wings” and the many other things that keep her wondering if her love will “ever be coming home.” Levin’s keys serve as the guide, flowing closely with Shires’ vocals and complementing the deep emotional flavor present in the lyrics. As Levin ushers her into the closing segment, Shires pleads alongside the keys on the song’s titular refrain, “Please, come home to me,” ending with the same raw, poignant ambiance that defined the tune throughout.
