After a few weeks off and an appearance at Innings Festival in Tempe, Strings heads to the Midwest for a three-nighter at The Slyvee in Madison, Wisconsin from March 3 – 5. Last night, Billy Strings kicked off a two-night stand at Portland, Maine’s State Theatre. Strings, mandolinist Jarrod Walker, bassist Royal Masat and banjoist Billy Failing debuted a cover of Jimmie Rodgers’ “The Brakeman’s Blues (Yodeling The Blues Away)” as Monday’s encore.
The quartet opened the evening by covering Doc Watson’s “Little Sadie.” Strings and company then played “Fire On My Tongue,” one of six songs from the guitarist’s recently released Renewal album to make the setlist. Other highlights from the first night in Portland included a tease-filled “Thirst Mutilator,” a take on the Grateful Dead’s “China Doll,” a solo “Am I Born To Die?” and a pairing of “Taking Water” and “Ice Bridges.”
“The Brakeman’s Blues (Yodeling The Blues Away)” was a geographically-appropriate choice to end the evening. Last night’s encore starts with the lyric, “Portland Maine is just the same as sunny Tennessee.” Billy Strings returns to the State Theatre in Portland, Maine tonight.
