Ed Sheeran served as the musical guest on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live. The hit-making singer-songwriter used the appearance to spotlight a pair of songs from his latest release, = (Equals) which arrived late last month. Sheeran, who is known for performing solo, continued a recent trend by welcoming a full band for his SNL spots.
For his first song, Sheeran opted for hit single “Shivers”, delivering it with the same plucky, alternate live approach displayed during his recent Tiny Desk (Home) Concert. For his second song, Ed Sheeran presented the SNL audience with a rendition of the upbeat sing-along, “Overpass Graffiti”, a tune he had recently debuted as part of the Tiny Desk session. While the album itself leans into more modern sounds and production elements, it’s been interesting to see the = (Equals) material take on a sort of late-’70s/early-’80s folk-rock earnestness in the live setting.
