Greensky Bluegrass resumed their 2021 Fall Tour at The Observatory North Park in San Diego on Thursday. The quintet welcomed keyboardist and frequent collaborator Holly Bowling for the entire second set and encore.
Holly got the evening going with a solo set featuring a selection of Grateful Dead and Phish classics. Bowling launched her set with GD’s “The Wheel” which led into Phish’s “Divided Sky.” Holly wrapped up her frame with a trip through Anthem Of The Sun’s “Cryptical Envelopment” and “The Other One” which included a call back to “The Wheel” with “Divided Sky” teases.
Greensky Bluegrass — mandolinist Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, banjoist Michael Bont, bassist Mike Devol and dobro player Anders Beck — kicked off their first set with the favorite “Living Over” followed by “Do It Alone.” The band also fit in “Just To Lie,” “Train Junkie,” “Into The Rafters” and “Nine Days” ahead of a cover of John Prine’s “Please Don’t Bury Me,” last time played on December 13, 2019 for a total gap of 78 shows, as per Phantasy Tour. After “Demons,” Greensky brought the first frame to a close with “Grow Together,” the second single from their upcoming album, Stress Dreams, arriving in early 2022.
GSBG then welcomed Bowling for the entire second set which got underway with “Fixin’ To Ruin” followed by the Bruzza-penned “Bottle Dry.” Holly then helped Greensky out on the bluegrass standard “Reuben’s Train” ahead of “In Control” off the quintet’s landmark 2014 album If Sorrows Swim. Greensky’s cover of Michigan-based singer-songwriter Joshua Davis’ “Last Winter In The Copper Country” came next ahead of the staple original, “I’d Probably Kill You.”

Greensky Bluegrass and Holly Bowling would bring the evening to a close with The Bailes Brothers bluegrass standard, “Send Me Your Address From Heaven.”
