Jenny Lewis Has All She Needs In New Single, “Puppy And A Truck” [Listen]

94

Former Rilo Kiley multi-instrumentalist Jenny Lewis released a new single on Wednesday, the Dave Cobb-produced “Puppy And A Truck”. The song is regularly included in the singer-songwriter’s live sets as she tours opening for Harry Styles.

With Cobb (Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Sturgill Simpson) at the helm, the track takes on a definitive country swing mixed with Lewis’ lighthearted sentimentality. The lyrics are imbued with Lewis’ own trademark sense of humor, beginning with the opening line, “My forties are kicking my ass and handing ’em to me in a margarita glass/ I was infatuated with an older man/ And then I dated a psychopath.”

If it weren’t done so lovingly, “Puppy And A Truck” could easily be construed as a send-up of the genre. Instead, Lewis is one of the many artists working to make it so “country” is no longer a dirty word in popular nomenclature. The centerpiece of the song is just plain good advice; if life isn’t going well, get a puppy and a truck.
