Kanye West, Drake Make Amends, Announce ‘Free Larry Hoover’ Benefit Concert

The long-running feud between two of the world’s biggest hip-hop artists has, at least momentarily, come to an end. Drake and Kanye West, who recently shortened his name to Ye, will perform together on Thursday, December 9th, at Los Angeles, CA’s LA Memorial Coliseum for a concert benefitting efforts to free Larry Hoover, who is currently serving six life sentences at the ADX Florence prison in Florence, Colorado.

On November 8th, West posted a video to Instagram which saw him standing alongside music exec J. Prince. In the clip, Ye called upon Drake to put the past aside and join him on stage to raise awareness for Hoover’s cause. With no official response, fans questioned whether or not such a collaboration was even possible.

Then, last week, on November 16th, Ye posted a picture to Instagram of him and Drake standing next to each other, alongside, J. Prince, a signal that the two had discussed their problems and moved past their long-held animosities. On Saturday, November 20th, West posted yet again, this time a picture of Hoover’s face. Text over the photo read “Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert” … “Performance by Ye [special guest] Drake.”

In a show of good faith, Ye even tipped a cap to the “Certified Lover Boy,” captioning the photo with “God’s Plan”, one of Drake’s most popular songs.

“I Believe This Event Will Not Only Bring Awareness to Our Cause but Prove to People Everywhere How Much More We Can Accomplish When We Lay Our Pride Aside and Come Together,” said Ye in a press release.

“With Ye, Drake, and J Prince United to Advocate For My Father’s Release, We Can Take Our Plea For Redemption Worldwide And Show That We Are Truly Stronger Together On Behalf Of Any and Everyone with a Love One Wrongly Or Unjustly Incarcerated…. Free My Father!” added Larry Hoover Jr.

Hoover, 70, is currently serving six life sentences in connection with the 1973 murder of a 19-year-old drug dealer. The Gangster Disciples co-founder has long been a popular figure in hip-hop, with countless songs referencing him and his legal situation.

Back in 2018, Ye met with former President Donald J. Trump to advocate for Hoover’s release. Hoover Jr. explained this situation and praised Ye for his unsuccessful efforts in “Jesus Lord”, a song that appeared on West’s latest album, Donda.

“What up, Ye? This Larry Hoover Jr./ First and foremost, I wanna thank you/ For taking the fight for my father to the Oval Office/ You might not have been the only one that could’ve did that/ But you were the one that did do that.”

Tickets for the Larry Hoover benefit concert with Kanye West and Drake go on sale Monday, November 22nd, at 10 a.m. PT. Head to the venue’s website for more information.
