Newly Remastered Video: Watch Grateful Dead Close Spring 1977 Passaic Run

The Grateful Dead capped off a three-night run at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on April 27, 1977. A newly remastered video of the complete performance recently surfaced on YouTube and is the subject of this week’s Sunday Cinema.

The concert featured the ‘70s Dead lineup of guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, keyboardist Keith Godchaux and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. GD kicked things off with Bobby leading the band through Chuck Berry’s “Promised Land.” Jerry then steped to the mic for “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” followed by Weir and Donna Jean dueting on “Looks Like Rain.”

Next, “Sugaree” boasted excellent vocals and guitar from Garcia before Bobby helmed Marty Robbins’ cowboy anthem, “El Paso.” The Dead then cooled things down a bit with a solid “Row Jimmy” before ramping it back up with “New Minglewood Blues.” Jerry led the band on a return to the Wild West with “Loser” ahead of an in-the-pocket “The Music Never Stopped” to close out the first set.

The Grateful Dead launched the second set with a relatively new song at the time, the Bob Weir/John Perry Barlow epic “Estimated Prophet,” debuted earlier in ‘77, which saw Keith manning a Moog synthesizer. The classic pairing of “Scarlett Begonias,” with bubbly bass from Phil, and “Fire On The Mountain” followed.

The Rascals-recorded “Good Lovin’” came next ahead of “Ramble On Rose.” Next, The Rhythm Devils banged out the Bo Diddley beat signaling “Samson And Delilah” ahead of a pair heavy-hitters to close out the second set beginning with the freshly unveiled “Terrapin Station” and followed by an outstanding and extensive “Morning Dew.” The Grateful Dead bookended the concert with another Chuck Berry number, the always rollicking “Johnny B. Goode.”
