NYC Winter Jazz Fest has revealed the first wave of its 2022 artist and event lineup. The festival will return on January 13th–22nd with over 500 musicians and 100 groups spread across 12 venues in New York City.
In its 18th year, NYC Winter Jazz Fest promises ten nights of extraordinary programming, marquee performances, major world premieres, and more. As part of the momentous occasion, NYCWJF and Moon31 have partnered and curated a day to screen, discuss, and engage with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson‘s award-winning film, Summer of Soul on Martin Luther King Jr.‘s birthday, January 15th. Questlove’s directorial debut contains yet-unreleased footage of the Harlem Cultural Festival from nearly 50 years ago, as well as interviews with original performing artists, attendees, and present-day Harlem residents. A conversation following the film’s screening at Roulette will ensue with Questlove, producer Joseph Patel, and chief curator of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Nwaka Onwusa.
Questlove will then head to Brooklyn’s House of Yes for a DJ set, alongside Georgia Anne Muldrow and Makaya McCraven, as well as a live curated performance from Grammy-award winner Maurice “Mobetta” Brown.
NYCWJF has also tapped Angel Bat Dawid as an artist in residence. The composer and multi-instrumentalist will host the world premiere of Afro-Town Topics: A Mythological Afrofuturist Revue. Bat Dawid’s event will present a Fats Waller-inspired original score using the traditional framework of a musical revue as a compositional blueprint with the intention of creating and exploring the production of new Afro sonic realities and futures. She will also perform a DJ set at the opening night event at City Winery on January 13th, as well as present her Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty on January 14th during the NYCWJF Marathon—the festival’s signature, multi-artist, multi-venue experience.
Additional artists and events also include the live debut of bassist Pino Palladino and multi-instrumentalist/producer Blake Mills, featuring drummer Sam Gendel and saxophonist Abraham Rounds, Terence Blanchard featuring The E-Collective and Turtle Island Quartet, Samara Joy, Mahogany Browne, and many more.
