Phish Members Discuss Performing In Europe, Favorite Songs & More On ‘Ask Phish’

221

Members of Phish answered questions from fans in the first installment of SiriusXM Phish Radio’s four-part “Ask Phish” series. The first segment saw Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman fielding queries about European excursions, who they would be starstruck by, their favorites songs and more.

Highlights from the first episode of “Ask Phish” included guitarist Trey Anastasio expressing interest in Phish returning to Europe after German fan Big V asked if that was a possibility:

Hey, Big V. Oh man, thank you so much for sending this question in. Please, please have us come back to Germany. Yes, I would love to come back to Germany. As a matter of fact, I have to say that early in our quote-unquote musical career, Fish and I, Jon Fishman and I, had one of the greatest gigs I’ve ever experienced in front of the Munich opera house when we were playing street music when we were 19 years old.

We rarely made any money and rarely did anyone pay much attention to us. But one night we parked ourselves in front of the Munich opera house with our little guitar and our flexatone that Fish was playing and the doors opened after the opera and out came all of these wealthy patrons, German patrons, and everyone started dancing around. It was like a riot; it was unbelievable. One of my favorite gigs ever, and that was in Germany. I would love to come back. Please have us. When do we come? Yes.

I also got to play a show once warming up for Lou Reed in Germany and he gave me some words of wisdom as we were walking on stage. So many great memories and I would love to make more. Thank you, Big V.

Drummer Jon Fishman also shared his memories of opening for Lou Reed:

We played with Lou Reed and the Violent Femmes in Nordheim, Germany in this amphitheater, and we had this interesting conversation with Lou Reed, that was kind of funny. He was like, “[get] up there and play some rock and roll. We invented it, after all we invented it.” I just remember him saying that.

I remember thinking to myself, like, I was confused by that (laughs) because it’s like, what do you mean?…but then I thought, well, he kind of was in the early…I think he just met Americans, you know, I think he meant the USA. Later, you know, he may have actually meant specifically Chuck Berry for all I know.

Additional highlights include “The Voice of the New York Jets” Bob Wischusen asking a great question about who the guys would be starstruck by. Trey names former Jets Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold and his sister the weightlifter Holley Mangold, Page names Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, and Mike names Bill Murray. But Fish shares some humorous stories involving Carole King and Prince:

I hit on Carole King once without knowing it was Carole King. And I knocked Prince flat on his ass by accident at Paisley Park. And I didn’t know it was Prince at the time either (laughs). So, in neither of those situations did I have the opportunity to be starstruck but I probably would have been.

The band also discussed their favorite songs and more. While Part Two aired this morning you can catch a replay on SiriusXM Phish Radio (Channel 29) of Parts One and Two on Sunday, November 28 beginning at 8 a.m. ET. Part Three premieres today at 4 p.m. ET (ahead of the first episode of the Dinner And A Movie Clifford Ball special) while Part Four (the final segment) airs tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET. Replays of Parts Three and Four will also broadcast on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
