The Slip kicked off their first substantial tour in well over a decade last night at Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont. The trio consisting of guitarist Brad Barr, drummer Andrew Barr and bassist Marc Friedman loaded the Thursday’s setlist with classic material and one recently debuted song.

Episode 103 of The JamBase Podcast features an interview with The Slip guitarist Brad Barr.
The first public The Slip headlining concert since 2011 began with “Landing” and “Get Me With Fuji,” the two songs that open the group’s 2002 Rykodisc debut Angels Come On Time. Next came the original tentatively titled “Long Ways Back” first played in August during the band’s appearance at Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s LOCKN’ mini-festival. Brad, Andrew and Marc then performed the beloved “Even Rats.”
The show rolled on with Angels Come On Time’s “Sometimes True To Nothing.” From there, the three-piece treated fans to “Motherwolf” and oldies “Chasing Rabbits” and “Trane-ing” before “Through The Iron Gate” gave way to “Life In Disguise.” The Slip then performed “The Weight Of Solomon,” the evening’s lone song off the band’s debut album From The Gecko. Last night’s main set concluded with the same way The Slip’s 2006 studio album, Eisenhower, ends — with the pairing of “The Original Blue Air” and “Paper Birds.”
The trio capped the night by covering The Band’s “The Weight” for their encore. Brad, Andrew and Marc completely reworked the tune and extended “The Weight,” which featured the “Dogs On Bikes” ending. The tour resumes tonight at Providence’s Fete Music Hall.
