The String Cheese Incident wrapped up three days of shows at the Suwannee Hulaween a rootsy set of upbeat classics and a Sunday Funday sit-in from new friend Sierra Hull and her band. Most seasoned scene veterans know the “never miss a Sunday show“ battle cry all too well, and Cheese wasn’t going to let down the faithful warriors who dug deep and rallied themselves for the early set at the sun kissed Spirit Of The Suwannee Meadow Stage.
Traditionally, the Sunday Meadow Stage opener is a bluegrass act Cheese has worked with in the past like Sam Bush, The Travellin McCourys or Elephant Revival, greasing the wheels for a sit-in with old friends. This year, the band kicked up the difficulty level up a notch when they brought out Sierra Hull and members of her band for their first onstage jam session.
Seeing such a seasoned band like The String Cheese Incident seek out and embrace these kinds of musical challenges should be heartening to music fans of all ages. If, after countless shows over the decades on stages around the world, a band can still be out there trying to find a new sound—to improve its range and find fresh takes on the craft—then surely the spirit of music is in no danger of fading away. So even as the sun set on the 2021 Hulaween, it was pretty obvious that String Cheese would be ready to return to the magic Spirit of the Suwannee next year and seek new ways to spell-bind and amaze loving fans and family under the sun and stars.
