TK & The Holy Know-Nothings Review

108

Hailing from Portland, Oregon TK & the Holy Know-Nothings brought their brand of psychedelic doom boogie to Hotel Café in Hollywood, CA on November 1st. The band took the stage with a high-energy and raucous performance.  During the show, the frontman, singer, and songwriter Taylor Kingman good-naturedly ribbed the laid-back audience. Kingman explained he thought the audience was too calm. He hoped they would be rowdier like at  other shows the band had recently played.

Kingman is an expressive singer with a versatile vocal range that is somehow both rough around the edges and smooth.

The group is currently on tour promoting their latest album, The Incredible Heat Machine, which conjures up the mood of hanging out at your late-night bar. This LP also features a bunch of groove-oriented West Coast country songs that burst into lively choruses.

Themes of substance abuse, redemption, companionship, salvation, and disillusionment permeate their material.  There were a number of highlights during the show including “Love is a Compromise,” “Ghost,” “Tunnel of a Dream,” “Serenity Prayer” and more.

This five-piece unit also features Jay Cobb Anderson on lead guitar, vocals; Lewi Longmire on bass, trumpet, vocals; Sydney Nash on keyboards, trumpet, vocals and Tyler Thompson on drums. Guest keyboardist Steve Swatkins (Allen Stone and Scary Pockets ) joined the band on “Heat.”

TK & The Holy Know-Nothings are an all-around entertaining band. They are passionate and animated. The group kept the pacing and momentum strong and it never wavered or lagged throughout their set at Hotel Café.
