Umphrey’s McGee Debuts Bad Company & Living Colour Covers In St. Louis

180

Umphrey’s McGee wrapped up a two-night run at The Pageant in St. Louis on Saturday. UM unveiled covers from Living Colour and Bad Company in a show that fell on bassist Ryan Stasik’s birthday who wore his Evil Knievel jumpsuit for the occasion.

Umphrey’s McGee got things underway with a rare cover of Ween’s “It’s Gonna Be A Long Night.” UM’s St. Louis “Long Night” marked just the third time Umphrey’s played the song by itself since debuting it in San Francisco in 2008, as per All Things Umphreys. The band mashed it up with Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades,” “Ace Of Long Nights,” in 2012 and included it on their 2016 mashups album Zonkey. The only other standalone performance came on January 25, 2019 in Milwaukee. UM then delivered originals “Eat” and “Remind Me” ahead of “FF,” which featured a “Birthday Bass Jam.”

From “FF,” Umphrey’s headed into another vintage tune, “Hajimemashite,” ahead of “Domino Theory” and “Go To Hell.” Staple “August” got underway with Stasik on a “Human Nature” (Michael Jackson) bass intro. Umphrey’s closed out the first frame with the first cover debut of the evening, Living Colour’s “Cult Of Personality.” Drummer Kris Myers sang lead on Living Colour’s 1988 hit which was also well-shredded by guitarist Jake Cinninger.

The five-song seamless second set began with “It Doesn’t Matter,” another song that features a bass intro from Stasik. UM then headed into classics “Ocean Billy” and “Uncommon.” More vintage UM followed in “Hangover” and “The Triple Wide” before the sextet closed out the second set with “1348.”

Stasik led the band back on stage for the encore telling the audience to “Love each other, drink water, get lots of sleep, don’t be a dick” to cheers. Guitarist Brendan Bayliss added, “I didn’t know 45-year-old men still celebrated their birthday” as Jake started up a tease of The Beatles’ “Birthday.” “The only request I have for my birthday,” Stasik continued, “is that you all get laid.” UM then debuted the Bad Company classic “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” Umphrey’s McGee would bring the evening to a close with “Glory.”
