Watch The Black Crowes Play ‘Charming Mess’ For 1st Time Since 1990

111

The Black Crowes busted out the original “Charming Mess” for the first time in over 31 years to end their Thursday night concert at House Of Blues Las Vegas. Led by Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson, the standalone two-night run in Las Vegas on Thursday and Friday continued a celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Black Crowes’ debut studio album, Shake Your Money Maker.

“Charming Mess” was recorded by The Black Crowes for Shake Your Money Maker but the studio version featuring the original lineup went unreleased until its inclusion on a reissue earlier this year. “We had plenty of hit songs on that record; I guess we didn’t need it,” Chris Robinson told Rolling Stone regarding “Charming Mess” back in February. “The beginning of that song really sounds like ‘Hot Legs,’” added the vocalist in reference to a Rod Stewart classic. “Thank goodness Mr. Stewart has given us his blessing to release it after all these years.”

The current Black Crowes lineup features Chris and Rich joined by longtime bassist Sven Pipien as well as guitarist Isaiah Mitchell, keyboardist Joel Robinow, drummer Brian Griffin and backing vocalists Mackenzie Adams and Leslie Grant. On Thursday and Friday, the band started by performing all 10 Shake Your Money Maker tracks in the order they appear on the album. The Black Crowes went the same route to kick off each stop of their U.S. tour earlier this year.

On Thursday, the group followed Shake Your Money Maker with “Sting Me” from 1992’s The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion. Next came the title track from 1999’s By Your Side and fan-favorite “Wiser Time.” The Black Crowes ended their main set on Thursday with The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion gems “Thorn In My Pride” and “Remedy.”

“This is something we haven’t played in a fucking long time, I hope you like it,” Chris Robinson exclaimed to introduce “Charming Mess” in Las Vegas. The evening’s encore was last played live on March 10, 1990 as per Setlist.FM. On Friday, The Black Crowes stuck to a similar plan post Shake Your Money Maker but included “No Speak No Slave” instead of “Sting Me” and “By Your Side.” Additionally, the group dusted off “God’s Got It” for the first time since November 11, 2013 as the encore. “God’s Got It” is a Reverend Charlie Jackson cover The Black Crowes recorded for their 2008 studio album, Warpaint.
