The documentary film, Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers, is available to stream on YouTube. The film debuted in March as an Official SXSW 2021 Selection, with a limited theatrical release following last month that coincided with what would have been Petty’s birthday.

Directed by Mary Wharton, Somewhere You Feel Free chronicles the period between 1993 and 1995 when Petty worked with acclaimed producer Rick Rubin on what became the landmark 1994 solo album, Wildflowers. The 89-minute movie includes previously unseen footage shot by Wharton and discovered in 2020 from an archive of 16mm film. The documentary presents interviews with members of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench.

Petty died in 2017 at the age of 66 from an accidental drug overdose. An expanded version of Wildflowers featuring several unreleased tracks, Wildflowers & All The Rest, was released in 2020.
