Allman Family Revival Tour Hits Atlanta

The fifth annual Allman Family Revival tour continued on Thursday night at the Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta. Organized by Devon Allman as a tribute to his father, the late Gregg Allman, the concert featured The Allman Betts Band serving as house band with special guests coming and going throughout a lengthy set.

Due to a semi-truck breaking down, last night’s show got off to a late start. The River Kittens kicked off the festivities with a 20-minute set. Then, The Allman Betts Band emerged to begin the main event, which spanned nearly three hours, with originals “Magnolia Road” and “King Crawler.” North Mississippi Allstars‘ Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson joined the fray for their own “Up And Rolling” and The Allman Brothers Band classic “Dreams” before vocalist Lamar Williams Jr. fronted the group on “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’” and Lilly Hiatt sang “Melissa.”

Joanne Shaw Taylor was the next featured performer for her original “Stop Messin’ Round.” Taylor also added to the Gregg Allman solo gem “I’m No Angel.” Southern rock legend Jimmy Hall then came out for “Keep On Smilin’” from his time in Wet Willie. From there “Statesboro Blues” led into “I Want My Crown” featuring the song’s author, Eric Gales. A fight broke out in the audience and Devon quickly got the attention of security. “I think that I speak for every one of us artists up here [when I say that] what was just happening over there is not cool,” Gales told the crowd. “However it needs to be resolved, it needs to be resolved, because that’s not what we came here for.”

The scuffle took place during a rousing rendition of Robert Randolph‘s “The March” featuring the sacred steel specialist, Eric Gales, Luther Dickinson and The Allman Betts Band. Bassist Berry Oakley Jr. held down the bottom end for most of the night, including on Donavon Frankenreiter‘s “Move By Yourself.” Berry, who along with bandmates Devon Allman and Duane Betts are the children of The Allman Brothers Band co-founding members, kept it a true family affair by swapping out at one point for his son, Shaun Oakley. Jimmy Hall’s son also contributed to the concert as did Eric Gales’ wife, LaDonna Gales.

Last night’s main set concluded with a run of Allman Brothers Band repertoire staples “One Way Out” and “Gambler’s Roll” split by Gregg Allman’s “Multi-Colored Lady.” For the encore, as the clock struck midnight, all of the evening’s performers packed the stage for “Midnight Rider.” Watch fan-shot video footage of the guest-filled “Midnight Rider” captured by Ed Payne below:
