Volkswagen is whetting the appetites of both EV enthusiasts and modern-day hippies with more news of the ID Buzz, the electrical revival of the iconic 70s-era people carrier.

Buried deep in a press release regarding the marque’s broader electrification plans and goals was the snippet, “[a] vehicle derivative, the ID California, has… been approved for [VW’s Hamburg production] site,” Carscoops first reported.

“California” indicates a camper microbus that will almost certainly include an space-creating pop-up roof.

CNET’s Roadshow notes that the current California family includes numerous models ranging from the petite Caddy California and the standard model based on the Transporter commercial van to the Grand California—a tricked out version of the Crafter workhorse van with living space for a family of four, an enclosed bathroom, and optional solar panels.

The automotive outlet also predicts it will be built on the VW’s MEB electric vehicle architecture that underpins the Volkswagen ID 4 SUV, likely with a 111-kWh battery pack and a longer wheelbase to maximize interior space.

“The ID California based on the ID Buzz will combine the ongoing trend towards mobile leisure arrangements with sustainable CO2-neutral mobility,” said VW Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra.

More details surrounding the VW ID Buzz California, including a launch date, remain a mystery. But the ID Buzz Cargo is scheduled to arrive in U.S. dealerships by 2023.
