Dopapod closed out a two-night run at Ardmore Music Hall on Friday night, treating the Pennsylvania crowd to a setlist full of fan-favorite originals, cover debuts, and teases galore.
Members Eli Winderman (keys), Rob Compa (guitar), Chuck Jones (bass), and Neal “Fro” Evans (drums) got things started with some sleight of hand, dropping into “Trickery”. Winderman led the charge for the opener, laying down some beefy and refined synth lines. After giving way to Evans for a measure, Compa took his place in the driver’s seat, delivering a few lines of symphonic leads, before Winderman and Jones once again controlled the navigation. As usual, the band traded lead work before settling into a fluid groove that carried for several minutes. A burst of distortion and the uptick in Evans’ tempo brought forth the night’s first peak in rambunctious fashion.

From there came a setlist staple, “Please Haalp”, from 2017’s Megagem album, ahead of a “Picture In Picture” that kept the crowd moving to the midpoint of the set. A rendition of “My Elephant vs. Your Elephant” followed and carried a segue to the unreleased “Hi Doggie”. An ever-popular Redivider track, “Trapper Keeper” fell in the penultimate spot, but Dopapod still had a nice surprise for the Ardmore Music Hall crowd. Proceeding “Trapper Keeper” came a debut of Ween‘s “Happy Colored Marbles”, a song that originally appeared on the band’s 2003 album, Quebec.
Winderman, Compa, Jones, and Evans apparently enjoyed the Ween debut so much that they came back for seconds, opening set two with “Happy Colored Marbles”. This found a home in an unfinished telling of “Onionhead” before the segue continued all the way back to “Trapper Keeper”, putting an end to the jam sandwich that progressed over two different sets. Up next came “Sleeping Giant”, before the Boston jam-rockers returned to segue city with a massive “Present Ghosts” > “Bats in the Cave” > “Off The Cuff” > “Psycho Nature” segment ensued. “Bats in the Cave” channeled the band’s inner DMX with a “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” tease, as well as a tease of John Scofield‘s “Hottentot”.
After closing the second frame with “Landmines”, the quartet returned for an encore beginning with a cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ “Around The World”. “23 Forever” followed, which contained a tease of Lettuce‘s “Squadlive”, and segued to an “Enter Sandman” (Metallica) jam before returning to “23 Forever”.
