Jason Isbell Debuts Now It’s Overhead Cover & Fits In Rarities During Atlanta Run

154

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit continued their run at Atlanta’s The Tabernacle on Friday and Saturday. Isbell and company unveiled a cover from Now It’s Overhead and welcomed the band’s Andy LeMaster on Friday and delivered an encore of rarities on Saturday.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit kicked Friday off with “It Get Easier” from their 2020 album Reunions. After the staple “Something More Than Free” from Isbell’s 2015 LP of the same name, Jason and the band reeled off four songs from Reunions: “Be Afraid,” “Letting You Go,” “Only Children” and “Overseas.” A return to More Than Free with “The Life You Chose” prefaced a pair of songs from Isbell’s 2013 LP Southeastern “Traveling Alone” and “Different Days.”

Reunions’ “What I’ve Done To Help” then came ahead of a pair of staples from The 400 Unit’s 2017 album, The Nashville Sound, “Hope The High Road” and “If We Were Vampires.” Isbell then broke into material from his Drive-By Truckers days with “Outfit” ahead of the staple “24 Frames.”

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit then welcomed Now It’s Overhead’s Andy LeMaster to sing and play guitar on his song “Reverse.” Isbell included the song on his Georgia Blue featuring covers from Georgia artists and benefitting nonprofit organizations Black Votes Matter, Fair Fight and Georgia STAND-UP. Guitarist Sadler Vaden then sang lead on another Georgia Blue track “Honeysuckle Blue” from the band Drivin N Cryin of which he was a member. Isbell closed out the set with Southeastern opener “Cover Me Up.” “Tour Of Duty” kicked off the encore followed by another song from Isbell’s Drive-By Truckers tenure, “Decoration Day,” to close out Friday.

While Saturday featured a number of the same songs, Isbell changed things up with “Go It Alone,” “Speed Trap Town” “Cumberland Gap,” and “Last Of My Kind.” Jason and company also included the Georgia Blue R.E.M. number “Drive 8” as well as another Isbell-penned Drive-By Truckers favorite, ”Never Gonna Change,” which counted as the penultimate song of the set. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit had a treat in store for The Nac with an encore of rarities beginning with a bust out of “Relatively Easy,” which made an appearance for the first time since 2018, as per SetlistFM. Another DBT Isbell era favorite, “Danko/Manuel,” a stellar song Jason penned for and about the legendary late members of The Band, brought Saturday to a close.
