Metallica celebrated their 40th anniversary with a pair of hometown concerts featuring career-spanning setlists in San Francisco over the weekend. The legendary band played at least one song from each of their 10 studio albums in chronological order on Friday in focusing on staples at Chase Center and pulled off the same feat in reverse chronological order at the venue with plenty of rarities on Sunday.
Actor Jason Momoa provided a voice-over discussing Metallica’s career as Ennio Morricone’s “The Ecstacy Of Gold” played over the PA and highlights from the band’s career aired on the video screen as the group took the stage on Friday. Metallica revved into the fitting “Hit The Lights” off the group’s 1983 debut studio album, Kill ‘Em All, to get the first concert underway. “Creeping Death” and “Trapped Under Ice” then represented 1984’s Ride The Lightning with the latter last played on June 23, 2012 as per Setlist.FM.
Master Of Puppets live staples “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” and “Orion” came next before rarity “The Shortest Straw” and the beloved “One” were the …And Justice For All live tracks played on Friday. From there The Black Album classics “Nothing Else Matters” and “Sad But True” gave way to “King Nothing” off 1996’s Load. The biggest surprise of the night followed in the live debut of Reload’s “Fixxxer.” Next up was a cover of Budgie’s “Breadfan” which was among songs featured on Metallica’s covers collection Garage Inc.. Friday’s concert concluded with “No Leaf Clover” (S&M), “Frantic” (St. Anger), “The Day That Never Comes” (Death Magnetic) and “Spit Out The Bone” (Hardwired… To Self-Destruct).
Metallica kicked off last night’s concert with the title track from Hardwired and then dusted off Death Magnetic’s “The End Of The Line” for the first time since November 18, 2010; St. Anger’s “Dirty Window” for the first time since December 10, 2011; controversial single “I Disappear” (the song at the heart of the band’s Napster lawsuit) for the first time since August 10, 2013 and their first cover of Diamond Head’s “Am I Evil?” since December 5, 2011. “The Memory Remains” and “Fuel” then represented Reload and Load respectively.
The band continued the show with two more rarities as “Bleeding Me” and “Wasting My Hate” each saw action for the first time since December 7, 2011. Metallica then delivered a run of live staples to end the night that included “The Unforgiven,” “Enter Sandman,” “Harvester Of Sorrow,” “Master Of Puppets,” “Fade To Black,” “Whiplash” and “Seek & Destroy.” The shows were livestreamed on Amazon Prime and Twitch via The Coda Collection with replays coming later this week.
