Disney Channel star-turned-pop princess Olivia Rodrigo headed to the DMV to record her new NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, which debuted Tuesday on the heels of the announcement of her 2022 Sour world tour.
Few artists have had as big a year as the 18-year-old singer-songwriter. She struck gold with her debut single, “drivers license”, in early 2021, and chased that with two more smash-hit singles, “deja vu” and “good 4 u”. Her first LP, Sour, bowed at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 and earned Rodrigo 2022 Grammy Award nominations in each of the “Big Four” categories: Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Record of the Year (“drivers license”), and Song of the Year (“drivers license”).
For her Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, Rodrigo played on the massive success of “drivers license” by taking over a branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles, “interesting vibes” and all. Backed by an all-woman band featuring Heather Baker (guitars), Hayley Brownell (drums, guitars), Arianna Powell (guitars), and Moa Munoz (bass, guitar), Olivia kicked off the performance with a unique take on “good 4 u” that peeled away the kiss-off track’s pop-punk studio instrumentation in favor of a five-guitar acoustic arrangement.
Next up came “traitor”, another teenage angst-riddled Sour earworm—Olivia’s current favorite from the album—before Rodrigo sat down at the piano to lead the DMV band through a stripped-down take on “drivers license”. With time for one more, Olivia Rodrigo stepped to the mic to belt out an emphatic “deja vu”, the finer qualities of her “sweet-and-salty” sound on full display in the simplified setting.
