Pigeons Playing Ping Pong staged its headlining performance at North Beach Music Festival on Friday night. The lengthy one-setter saw sit-in appearances from The Horn SectionJason Hann (The String Cheese Incident), Alric “A.C.” Carter (TAUK), and Joey Porter (The Motet).

Members Greg Ormont (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Schon (guitar), Ben Carrey (bass), and Alex Petropulos (drums) took the North Beach Bandshell stage as a four-piece, kicking off the set with a short and upbeat party-starter, “Yo Soy Fiesta”. Located right on the sandy shores of Miami, FL’s North Beach, Pigeons continued with oceanic themes, launching into the uplifting “Poseidon”, before filling the crowd’s cups with “Water”.

A newer tune, “Move Like That”, followed and saw the first sit-in of the evening. The String Cheese Incident’s Jason Hann joined PPPP on percussion for this one, and stayed for an always-lengthy telling of “Upfunk”, from the band’s Psychology album. Ormont then led the band into its newest tune, “Let The Boogie Out“, sans percussion, before A.C. linked up with the group on keys for an extended “Sunny Day”.

The Horn Section (Formerly of Turkuaz) made its way to the stage as Carter left, and would stay on for the remainder of the evening. With the full compliments of saxophone and trumpet, the now-seven-piece worked its way into “King Kong” before a segue lead to a take on Stevie Wonder‘s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”. The Wonder cover eventually found its home back in “King Kong”, which ended the set. Pigeons and The Horn Section returned for a two-song encore, the first of which, “F.U.”, included Joey Porter on keys. Finally, the band ended with a song about an old Baltimore friend, “Doc”.
