JamBase partners Osiris Media presented An Afternoon With Osiris featuring music and conversation this past Sunday, December 12 at Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Highlights from the event are being shared as a special four-part recap on The Drop podcast with today’s third installment focusing on The Disco Biscuits keyboardist Aron Magner.
Magner’s bandmate, bassist Marc Brownstein, also took part in the event with his appearance coming on the next The Drop. Part 1 includes Tom Marshall interviewing longtime collaborator Anthony Krizan before the guitarist plays two songs with house band FeelFree. The second part finds The War On Drugs’ Charlie Hall chatting with hosts Matt Dwyer and RJ Bee as well as two songs from Hall and FeelFree.
Aron spoke with Matt Dwyer and RJ Bee to start today’s The Drop episode. The conversation from Sunday at Ardmore Music Hall began with Magner discussing his musical roots and how he “threw in the towel” on performing classical music as a 10-year-old before he realized “I think I want to take piano lessons again” two or three years later. Aron’s parents found him a new teacher who introduced him to jazz and by the time he was 15 or 16 he began performing gigs locally.
The Philadelphia native attended the University of Pennsylvania. He had a hard time determining a major and eventually settled on music. However, by this time he had formed the Disco Biscuits. Magner decided he had to make a decision on whether to focus on his studies or touring with tDB. “So, I dropped out of an Ivy League school to join a psychedelic jam-rock band,” Aron exclaimed.
Magner went on to talk about learning to play rock music and the influence of the Grateful Dead as well as a eureka moment when he bought a synthesizer. “I remember this moment of playing with this synthesizer and just wanting it,” Aron told Bee and Dwyer. “I didn’t have the money for it and asked my dad if he would buy it for me under the guise of ‘this is going to change my life.’” The keyboardist noted the same model of the synth is still in his touring rig. Other topics hit upon were how Magner dealt with the early days of the pandemic and performing with Billy & The Kids and Carlos Santana.
