The Disco Biscuits kicked off their 2021 New Year’s Eve run at The Fillmore Philadelphia on Thursday. The quartet delivered two seamless sets including covers from Pink Floyd and LCD Soundsystem for the first of two New Year’s hometown concerts in Philly.
The Disco Biscuits — guitarist Jon Gutwillig, bassist Marc Brownstein, keyboardist Aron Magner and drummer Allen Aucoin — got the show underway with “Caves Of The East.” Brownie manned the synth bass on the song he composed which the band fittingly dusted off for the first time in nearly three years at Tennessee’s The Caverns in November, as per Phantasy Tour. Magner delivered the song’s main melody on synth while Barber knocked out the underlying guitar riff ahead of a “Fresh Prince Of Bel Air” sample for the Philly crowd.
The jam then took a lighter turn as Brownstein hopped back on bass guitar and Bisco found their way into Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell.” The band left the song unfinished and got into a trance jam which headed into “Rock Candy.” “Astronaut” and “Cyclone” followed ahead of a return to “Rock Candy” to close out the seamless set.
Also a seamless affair, tDB kicked off the second set with the classic “Confrontation” which headed into just the third rendition of LCD Soundsystem’s “Tribulations,” as per PT. The quartet also busted out the song at The Caverns after debuting it at Camp Bisco 2018.
An Eden “Tractobeam Jam” emerged from “Tribulations” and segued into “Orch Theme,” a tune originating from Brownstein and Magner’s Conspirator side project. An inverted “Svenghali” followed before tDB bookend the set with “Confrontation.” The Disco Biscuits returned to encore with “We Like To Party.”
